Right after checking their SSC result, most students have the same follow-up question: "How exactly did they calculate my GPA?" The number on your marksheet isn't as simple as an average — it follows a specific grading formula that trips up even students who did well. This guide breaks it down clearly.

The Bangladesh Grading Scale

SSC results use a letter-grade system, each tied to a grade point:

How GPA Is Calculated

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average of the grade points across all your compulsory and elective subjects — not counting your 4th/optional subject in the base calculation.

The general formula:

GPA = Sum of grade points from all required subjects ÷ Number of required subjects

For most students, this means 7 core subjects: Bangla (1st + 2nd paper counted as one subject average), English (1st + 2nd paper), Mathematics, Religion, ICT, and two group-specific subjects (or more, depending on your group).

Where the 4th Subject Comes In

This is the part that confuses the most students. Your 4th (optional) subject doesn't get added into the average directly. Instead:

• If you score A+ (grade point 5) or higher-than-required threshold in your 4th subject, any grade points above 2.00 get added as bonus points to your total GPA.
• If your 4th subject grade point is 2.00 or below, it contributes nothing extra (and doesn't hurt your GPA either, unless you fail it outright).

Example: If your 4th subject grade point is 5.00 (A+), you get (5.00 − 2.00) = 3.00 bonus points added to your total grade point sum before dividing by your number of core subjects.

Say a Science group student has these grade points: Bangla: 4.00, English: 4.00, Math: 5.00, Religion: 3.50, ICT: 5.00, Physics: 4.00, Chemistry: 3.50, Biology (4th subject): 5.00

Core subjects (7): 4.00 + 4.00 + 5.00 + 3.50 + 5.00 + 4.00 + 3.50 = 29.00 4th subject bonus: (5.00 − 2.00) = 3.00 Total: 29.00 + 3.00 = 32.00 GPA = 32.00 ÷ 7 = 4.57

At the SSC stage alone, you'll only see GPA on your marksheet.

Failing a Subject

If a student receives an F grade (below 33 marks) in any required subject, the overall result is marked as failed, regardless of how well other subjects were scored — GPA isn't calculated for a failed result. Improvement/supplementary exams are typically offered for students in this situation.
